Each school year was special, but I always remember the excitement of being in the Senior class of 1953. It was a distinction to be a senior at SHS. Aside from our classes, we had a busy year planning and earning funds for the bus trip and lodging for our Senior trip to Washington DC. This was a traditional event for every Senior Class and anticipated throughout our years at SHS. We found many opportunities to earn, but the most profitable was serving dinners to civic clubs of Swainsboro. We earned enough that every Senior of 1953 was able to make the trip via Trailways bus to our capital city. It was a two-day trip with a stopover in Luray Virginia and a visit to Luray Caverns. On arrival we rode through the city and around the capital of our country and admired the gold dome. The next day we toured the capital, sat in the balcony of Congress in session and visited Senator Walter George in his office. Our hearts filled with patriotism. The trip was completed with a visit to a nearby amusement park which had a roller coaster. (I did not ride). We returned home from a trip we will always cherish. When the bus stopped at the courthouse square, we did not immediately leave the bus. We realized we would probably never again be together as a class. We were somber and went around to each classmate to say “good bye”. Write to Shirley at [email protected].
