The Veterans at the Library held their first meeting of 2024 on Tuesday, January 2, at 9 a.m. at the Franklin Memorial Library. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 45 in attendance, including one new veteran, Jason Robert Childress. Jason served in the United States Marine Corps from February 1993 to September 2018. He is a veteran of “Operation Enduring Freedom” and was stationed at Rivers Island, MCAS New River, MCAS Tsurumi, MCAS Hawaii and MCAS Beauford, SC. Childress’ highest rank received was MSGT (E8). The program for the morning was presented by Lt. Jay Sconyers, son of Norma and Julian Sconyers. Jay presented an outstanding program about the U.S. Air Force Bands across the world, what their missions are and who their presentations are given. Just about everyone of their band members have a master’s degree and Jay has his Doctorate, and is stationed in San Antonio, TX. Chair John discussed what a great success the 2023 Wreaths Across America was and that the wreaths are scheduled to be picked up on Saturday, January 20. This year, they placed a little over 1,600 wreaths and hope that more churches, organizations and individuals will come on board with for 2024.
