In the heart of Emanuel County, a beacon of hope is shining bright on South Main Street. The Lazarus Project, a community initiative born from the collaboration between Beacon of Hope Church of God and the Methodist Men of First Methodist Church of Swainsboro, is set to make a profound impact on the lives of those in need.

Located at 664 South Main Street, The Lazarus Project began its mission by providing gently used furniture to families facing crises such as fire, domestic abuse, homelessness, or limited income. Beds, furniture, and appliances, often taken for granted, are precious lifelines for individuals navigating personal hardships. The project, driven by a spirit of compassion, concern, and connection, treats each person with Christian hospitality, offering a glimmer of hope to those who feel hopeless.

Building on the success and community support garnered by the furniture outreach, The Lazarus Project is expanding its scope by adding a much-needed food pantry. With food insecurity affecting approximately 18% of Emanuel County residents, according to Feeding America, this addition aligns with the project’s commitment to creating equitable access to essential resources.

Aetna, an American managed health care company, has played a pivotal role in supporting this expansion. Their generous grant and partnership have allowed The Lazarus Project to enhance its services and make a more significant impact on addressing hunger within the community.

The Ribbon Cutting ceremony for The Lazarus Project’s expanded services is scheduled for December 11, at 1:30 p.m. They extend a warm invitation to all community members to join them in celebrating this significant milestone. The joint effort between Beacon of Hope Church of God, the Methodist Men of First Methodist Church, and the invaluable support from Aetna exemplifies the power of unity in the community.

“Our aim is to relieve hunger through the mobilization of resources and community involvement,” says Pastor John Hancock, III, a key figure in The Lazarus Project. “We believe that by providing access to healthy and nutritious foods, we can not only address immediate needs but also offer hope to those who feel hopeless.”

Volunteers play a crucial role in this mission, and The Lazarus Project is calling on the community to join this noble cause. The collaboration between Beacon of Hope Church of God, the Methodist Men of First Methodist Church of Swainsboro, and Aetna is inspiring, and they are eager to welcome more individuals, schools, churches, and civic groups to unite for a common goal – improving the quality of life for all Emanuel County citizens.

As they anticipate the Ribbon Cutting on December 11, let’s come together as a community to support The Lazarus Project. By extending their hands and hearts, they can make a significant impact on the well-being of our neighbors and contribute to a brighter, more hopeful future for Emanuel County. Your presence at the ceremony will not only mark a historic moment, but also signify your commitment to building a stronger, more compassionate community.
