Mrs. Patsy Elizabeth Kersey, 80, of Swainsboro, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at her residence following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Friday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Will Martin officiating, assisted by Elder Craig Lanier. Interment followed at New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday, March 28, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were John Kersey, Wesley McRae, Chris Cliett, Evans Hooks, Ricky Hooks and Walt Donald. Honorary pallbearers were the SHS Class of 1961, former officers, directors and employees of The Central Bank, First Liberty Bank and BB&T of Swainsboro.

Mrs. Kersey was born June 25, 1943, to the late Roy R. Hooks and Nettie Smith Hooks. She attended Wesley school through seventh grade. Patsy then transferred to Swainsboro High School where she graduated from SHS in 1961. She attended ABAC and later transferred to UGA. After college, Patsy moved to Atlanta where she worked before moving back to Swainsboro and began working at The Central Bank in 1968. While working at The Central Bank, she was one of the employees to be held up in the first bank robbery in Emanuel County in 1982. During Patsy’s banking career, she worked with The Central Bank, First Liberty Bank, and then BB&T where she retired after 41 years. Mrs. Kersey is preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Wayne Kersey; brother, Roy Milton Hooks; sisters, Katherine H. Byers, Lynelle H. Huston, Jean H. Allen, Sara H. Mintz and Ann H. Mason.

Mrs. Kersey is survived by her son, Ryan Kersey of Swainsboro; daughter, Tara Newsome of Swainsboro; grandchildren, Carrie Newsome, John Kersey and Katelyn Kersey; several nieces, nephews and many friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: New Hope Church Cemetery Fund, 671 Nunez Lexsy Road, Swainsboro, GA 30401.

The family wishes to thank the staff of PruittHealth Hospice Swainsboro and Mrs. Kersey’s caregiver, Julie Morgan, for the care provided during her illness.

Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
