Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors announces the death of Mrs. Sandra Kay Oglesby Cowart, age 77, of Garfield, on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at her residence. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Graham officiating. Burial followed at the Hebron Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Garfield. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers were Jay Hendley, Wesley Hendley, Tommy Paul, and Roger Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were Jackie West (special cousin), Veda Parker (special friend), Eloise Hendley (special friend).

Mrs. Sandra Cowart was born January 4, 1947, in Jenkins County, to Willie and Audrey Kay Oglesby. She graduated from Emanuel County Institute in 1964, then went on to graduate from Swainsboro Technical School. As a Garfield resident, Sandra worked for several years at Atkinson Candies. She prided herself in being a wife, mother, and grandmother most of all. Mrs. Sandra loved her grandchildren and great granddaughter immensely. She loved to shop at Belk and Hobby Lobby and enjoyed going for her weekly visit to Brenda Coleman’s beauty shop. Sandra was a member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church. Mrs. Cowart is preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John Ell and Robbie Nell Hendley; and brother-in-law, Derrell Hendley.

Survivors include her loving husband of almost 59 years, James O “Jimmy” Cowart of Garfield; sons, James O “Jim” Cowart (Sondra) and Mitchell Cowart (Janice), both of Garfield; two grandchildren, Zach Cowart (Katie) and Abigail Cowart (Ty Hutson), both of Twin City; one great- granddaughter, Annie Caroline Cowart; sister-in-law, Janice Hendley of Garfield.

Durden-Hudson Funeral Directors was in charge of arrangements.
