The Veterans at the Library held their 1st Annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 18. They had a full slate of teams with 18 teams, four per team. Each team was given a bag of items such as event t-shirts and golf ball towels, sausage biscuits, orange juice and coffee for breakfast and for lunch, grilled chicken, beans and cold drinks prepared by Veteran Albert Hall using his secret recipe’s. When Commander Steve Burke ordered Compatriot Dess Smith III to fire the six-pounder Field Gun cannon to start the Veterans Cup Golf Tournament at 8 a.m., the clouds parted, and the rain came down heavy for about 10 minutes. The first-place team, with a score of 67, were Henry Hall, Tyler Rhodes, Derek Webb and Jody Hudson. There was a tie for second place team with a score of 68, ‘Team Riner’, Cooper Riner, Richard Braddy, Layton Terwilliger and Colton Lewis tied with ‘Team Chappell’, Charlie Chappell, Mark Jordan, Chad Roberts and Jon Wingate. Besides the $619.00 for first place and $319.00 each for the tied teams, there were about 15 nice door prizes and a drawing for a $350.00 pistol of your choice with purchased tickets. There was also a special prize on hole #3 for anyone with a hole in one; a cash prize of $10,000.00 that nobody won. Chair Johnny Tapley said that he could not wait until the 2nd Annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament and it’s going to be bigger and better than this one, outstanding. The event was outstanding, thanks to the veterans, local businesses, team participants, Swainsboro Country Club, the Franklin Memorial Library, DAR, SAR, and many others.
