The Kite Community 5th Sunday Night Gospel Sing will be held Sunday, June 3o, from 6 -7 p.m. at Kite First Baptist Church featuring the Buxton Family.

It’s been about 32 years since the Buxtons came off the road as a traveling quarter, so no doubt there will be some who are not familiar with them.

Randy and Freddie Buxton started singing in church when they were six years old, and a few years later, with their sister Regina and older brother Michael. They started traveling on weekends as a group around 1972. Their father, JC Buxton and Michael’s wife Ann soon joined the group forming the quartet. Freddie’s wife Penny started singing with the group in 1985 and now Randy, Freddie and Penny form the current line-up.

Although the group won several awards during the 1980’s through the Southern Gospel Music Association, they are best known for their recording of Randy’s song I’m Gonna Take A Vacation. The song was released nationally under Mark 5 Records in the spring of 1986, and by the end of the year it was #1 at several radio stations across the country and had charted at #25 in the nation’s top 40 chart. In the Singing News Fan Awards, it was nominated as one of the top 20 songs for 1986. Due to the song’s charting position, the group was featured with Randy being interviewed on Paul Heil’s nationally syndicated radio program The Gospel Greats.

The Buxtons no longer travel regularly as a group but are reuniting for this special night.

Everyone is invited to come hear the Buxtons as they worship through music.
