The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday morning, June 24, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 50 in attendance. The Women’s Group from Jesus Saves Church fed them breakfast to include breakfast casserole, donuts, muffins, biscuits with sausage gravy, orange juice, grape juice, cranberry juice and coffee. In attendance was also the Jesus Saves Youth Group and they sang the Star Bangle Banner and two praise songs. Chair Johnny then called on Veteran Dess Smith III to introduce the program for the morning. Veteran Bernard Martin presented his program on the “Attack on the U.S.S. Stark”. Bernard was a member of the ship and he and several other Sailers were transferred the morning of the attack that afternoon. After Bernard’s outstanding presentation, he presented three U.S.S. Stark Challenge Coins to the three oldest veterans at the meeting, Watson Mosley, Gene Ragsdale and Joel Moring.

A special thanks to Ty Smith, Johnny Tapley and the Community service workers for picking up limbs, spreading dirt and helping with the garden spot of the Glad Garden Club at the Veterans and 1st Responders Memorial Park workday Saturday, June 22. Also, thank you to Battle Lumber Company for the railroad ties they donated to the park and the dump truck load of soil donated from Beasley Hauling Company.
