The Lady Dawg softball team picked up two more region wins last week to bring their region record to 9-1. Their only region loss was a 2-1 defeat by Screven Co. a couple of weeks ago. The Lady Dawgs host the Gamecocks, with an 8-1 region record, tomorrow for the region lead. A win by the Bulldogs would put them in the driver’s seat to capture yet another region championship with three remaining region games left on the schedule.

On August 10, the Lady Dawgs were in Claxton to take on the Tigers. They easily took care of the Tigers 13-1 in five innings for another region win. Jayna Kearson led the game off with a triple and it was all downhill for the Tigers for the rest of the game. After taking a 1-0 lead in the first, the Bulldogs batted around in the second inning to post five more runs to take an early 6-0 lead. After a quiet third inning, ECI added three in the fourth inning and put the icing on the cake in the fifth, scoring six more runs for a 13-0 lead. The Tigers went down in order in the bottom of the fifth to lose the region game to the Bulldogs 13-0. Jayna Kearson continued her hot streak with three hits, including a double and triple. Ending the game with two hits each were Senaria Hillman and Maddie Funderburk. Five other Bulldogs had one hit each. Mary Katherine Durden went the distance in the circle, giving up just two hits, striking out eight Tiger batters.

Last Thursday, the Lady Dawgs hosted Metter in Twin City, defeating the Tigers 5-2. Like in the Claxton game, the Bulldogs got on the board after a leadoff triple, this time by Charley Mitchell in the second inning. They put three on the board in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Metter put single runs on the board in the fourth and fifth innings for their only runs of the game. The Lady Dawgs added one run each in the fourth and sixth innings for a 5-2 lead. Durden and her defense put the Tigers down in order to bring their region record to 9-1. Picking up hits in the game were Jayna Kearson, two hits, Kayanna Thompson and Kiley Grimes, one hit and a triple by Charlie Mitchell.

Mary Katherine Durden held the Tigers to just four hits, with five strikeouts and zero walks.

The Dawgs played in a tournament in Wrightsville Saturday defeating Cook Co. 5-1 in a rain shortened game. In addition to the showdown against Screven Co., ECI traveled to Baxley to play the Appling Co. Pirates yesterday, Tuesday, September 17. © Copyright 2024 The Forest-Blade/Emanuel County Live.
