The Brier Creek Artillery, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution, traveled to East Georgia State College on Wednesday, September 11, to participate in the college’s annual 9/11 Commemoration. This year’s event began at 7:30 a.m. with an outstanding breakfast for the Veterans at the Library group at the college cafeteria. The ceremony began at 8:30 a.m., attended by close to 200 people, including the 1st Responders, Veterans, Brier Creek Artillery, Fire Trucks with a U.S. Flag flying and school officials. When the siren sounded at 8:46 a.m., it signified the time when the Twin Towers were struck. Commander Steve Burke then gave the command for a three-round volley by the Brier Creek Artillery’s two six pounder cannons and then taps was played by Veteran Bob Nobles on his bugle. The three artillery volleys commemorated the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania. The two cannons were fired by Steve Burke, Dess Smith III and Bill Carmichael of the Wiregrass Chapter and Alton O’Neal McCloud of the Little River Chapter.
