Last week was an exhilarating one for the Swainsboro Middle School (SMS) football program as they competed in the MGMSAA semifinals against West Laurens Middle School, vying for a spot in the championship game. The SMS Tigers delivered a commanding performance, securing a 26-0 victory over WLMS on Wednesday.

The scoring opened with Chase Banks’ 9-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The second quarter showcased the Tigers’ powerful running game, as Kyle Johnson sprinted for an impressive 60-yard touchdown. Just before halftime, Jayvion Sherrod threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jeffery Davis, further extending the Tigers’ lead. Sherrod continued to shine, adding a 2-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, followed by a successful two-point conversion.

Not to be overshadowed, the SMS Tiger defense, respectfully known as the “Wreckin Crew,” demonstrated remarkable strength and discipline, echoing the physicality of their high school counterparts. The defense pitched a shutout, cementing the Tigers’ 26-0 victory.

After the game, I had the opportunity to speak with some of the players. Eighth-grade quarterback and middle linebacker Jayvion Sherrod emphasized the importance of leadership, toughness, and grit as the team prepares for the championship. “I love this team,” he said. “They’ve done an amazing job this season, but we have more work to do. We have to leave no doubt about who’s the best on the field.”

Eighth-grade offensive lineman Cameron Ricks shared his focus on success in the championship. “Our job is to control the line of scrimmage, making sure no defenders get to our quarterback or running backs. As offensive linemen, we love making pancake blocks, and we plan to get plenty of those in the championship game.”

Wide receiver and defensive back Caleb Jones reflected on the team’s growth this season. When asked about the challenge ahead, he said, “Containing Dublin’s run game is going to be key. They’re big and physical, but we can match their intensity. We’re ready for the challenge.”

Head Coach Corey Chalker also shared his thoughts on the semifinal victory and offered a preview of the upcoming championship matchup:

MGMSAA Semifinals Recap

“Against WLMS, we established a solid ground game, led by our offensive line and supported by the backs and receivers on the perimeter. We remained disciplined, committing only one penalty. Our focus on minimizing mistakes and taking care of the ball was a huge factor in the outcome. Defensively, our team came out with a point to prove, swarming to the football with physicality and discipline. Their effort resulted in a shutout and earned us a spot in the MGMSAA Championship.”

MGMSAA Championship Preview

“Looking ahead to Dublin, we’re up against a skilled and disciplined team running a time-tested Wing-T offense. In our first matchup, we secured a 14-6 victory in a defensive showdown. Since then, both teams have improved. Our game plan is to bring discipline, effort, positive attitudes, and toughness to every play. We’re grateful to have the support of our parents, teachers, administrators, coaches, and community, who consistently rally behind our student-athletes.”

The championship game will kick off at a special time 6 PM on Wednesday October 30 at Tiger Field. Let’s come together, Tiger Nation, and support these talented young athletes as they aim to bring the championship home!
