Mr. Sutton Virgil Wells, Jr., 83, of Swainsboro, passed away Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Emanuel County Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 4, 2025, at 11 a.m. at The First Methodist Church with Reverend David Unkles officiating, and Reverend Hugh Baxter, Reverend Mark Hardin, committal being performed by Reverend David Unkles. Family received friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. prior to service. A private interment was held at Hawhammock Baptist Church Cemetery.

Honorary escorts were the 1959 graduating class of Swainsboro High School, LeRoy Williams Sunday School Class Past and Present members and Past and Present Chancel Choir members.

Virgil was born April 25, 1941, to the late Sutton Wells and Lucille Kemp Wells. He was a lifelong resident of Swainsboro. Virgil graduated from Swainsboro High School Class of 1959. He was a member of the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1963 and was a member of the Swainsboro Jaycees. Mr. Wells was a member of the First Methodist Church of Swainsboro Chancel Choir before having to retire in 2016 due to health issues. He was a member of the LeRoy Williams Sunday School Class. Mr. Wells retired from the City of Swainsboro as the City Administrator with over 23 years of service from 1975 to 1998. He enjoyed maintaining his yard until his health failed him. Virgil enjoyed working on special projects in the workshop. His greatest joy was his grandchildren, and he loved watching them play sports. Virgil’s great love for music led him to the many choirs among Swainsboro Churches for special musicals. Mr. Wells is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bennie Wells; and granddaughter, Anna Leigh Wells.

Mr. Wells is survived by his wife of 35 year, Judy Wells; children, Michael Wells (Rachel) of Jekyll Island, Cassie McIntyre of Swainsboro and Bishop McIntyre (Torrey) of Dublin; grandchildren, Emma Wells (Brannen), Lainey Antonow (Paul), Ethan Wells, Sydney Rigdon, Katlyn McIntyre (Mason) and Reese McIntyre; sister, Patricia Thomas (Al) of Swainsboro; nieces, great-nephews, cousins and extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: The First Methodist Church of Swainsboro Organ Fund, 319 W. Main Street, Swainsboro, Georgia 30401.

Chapman Funeral Home of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.
