Erin Stanford, an 11th grade honor student at Emanuel County Institute (‘ECI’), recently participated in the first training session for her service initiative, Operation Digital Heroes. Partnering with United Veterans of Millen, Inc. (‘UVoM’), a local nonprofit organization ded-icated to supporting military veterans, she created the program to empower military veterans through computer literacy. The free program teaches basic computer and digital skills that are essential for everyday life.

The initiative was developed out of Stanford’s selection as a Bullard Community Champion, an honor awarded by Rodney Bullard, CEO of The Same House, to promising youth leaders who participated in the University of Georgia’s Youth LEAD Georgia program. The funding Stanford received as part of her award has enabled her to bring this important vision to life in collaboration with UVoM.

“As a JROTC officer at ECI, I know how important it is that we support our military veter-ans,” said Stanford. “Developing Operation Digital Heroes was my way to give back and create a more meaningful connection to my community. Mr. Bullard was extremely kind in providing the funding for the project, and I can’t thank him and everyone at UGA and Chick-fil-A for making this possible.”

“Veterans have served our country, and it’s our duty to support them in whatever stage they are in transitioning back into civilian life,” added UVoM’s President, Stephen Thompson. “Many veterans, primarily our older counterparts, face unique challenges, and one of those challenges is computer literacy and being able to keep up with the fast pace of digital tech-nology. We’re grateful that Erin decided to partner with us to help so many that are deserv-ing.

UVoM works with Stanford to identify participants and provide logistical support. The next session will be held in Millen on February 12, at 6 p.m.
