The Veterans at the Library traveled to Savannah Friday, April 11, 2025, at 8:30 a.m. to visit the Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum. With Chair Johnny Tapley in charge, they had 28 in attendance. Before they left, Shari Watt provided sausage biscuits with jelly and orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice and apple juice. They were furnished a 15-passenger van by Daniels Chevrolet, plus six of the veterans furnished their vehicles to make the trip to the museum. Thanks so much to the Beta Sigma Phi of Swainsboro for donating the funds to pay for all 28 to gain admission to the museum and enough money for the entire group to travel to Midway afterwards to Capt. Joe’s Seafood Restaurant to eat lunch. The museum tour guide, John, took them on an outstanding tour of the museum which last about 2-1/2hours. They were able to see three short videos, many artifacts from World War II and several planes, including the main bomber of the War in Europe, the B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber and the famous P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft which provided cover for the bombers to bomb the factories in Germany. One thing that several of them remember is about the late Veteran James Free from Swainsboro who was flying in a B-17 when it was shot down over Germany and he was captured and spent the rest of WW II as a POW. Thanks again to the Beta Sigma Phi for supporting the veterans and making this trip, together, possible.
