We Georgians have reason to take pride in our heritage and the values we represent. Georgia has 159 counties, second highest next to Texas. Throughout our state you will find men and women of any station in life who become fast friends who work together for the betterment of all. How can this be in a large diverse population of folks from Fulton County or a much smaller Emanuel County. It is my home and your home. This is a story of the founding of the great state of Georgia.
General James Oglethorpe, a British soldier, and member of Parliament is the founder of our beloved home state.
In England when he found that people who owed debts and could not pay were put into prison until the total was paid. Oglethorpe realized this was impossible since the prisoners had no means of earning.
Therefore, King George II was having to support a prison continually filling with more prisoners. Oglethorpe recommended a solution to the King that was not cruel and abusive but solved the situation of overcrowded prisons. The prisoners were eager and thankful for this chance for a new life for their families. Three ships filled with future Georgians sailed over the rough seas of the Atlantic Ocean and reached their destination in 1733. General Oglethorpe and colonist were welcomed by the Indian population and readily accepted their help and ad-vice. Georgians learned much from our new Indian friends. Working together and becoming friends is a value that Georgians know is for the betterment of all. May we always remember and honor our heritage. Write to Shirley at [email protected].
