Elsie Howington will be the featured artist for July-August at The Kalmanson Gallery of Emanuel Arts Council. An opening reception will be held July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. The exhibition called “Fleeting Objects: Visual Representations of Discarded Architecture” is free and open to the public.
This exhibition examines the forms and spaces in commercial structures left behind in the wake of urban renewal. Each artwork is an indexical gesture that catalogs an element from the structure, its obsolescence, and its demolition.
“The source material consists of photographs that I take and artifacts that I collect from the site,” said Hill. “I combine, rearrange, and manipulate these images and artifacts in order to identify and isolate significant elements. The painted image serves as a re-presentation of an object or space that has been made obsolete. When the painting is paired with an artifact, the work toggles between simulation and incorporation of elements from the former structure resulting in a visual record of architecture discarded in the wake of urban renewal.”
The exhibition will be on display at the gallery through August 22.
