The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Franklin Memorial Library Monday, August 18, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 52 in attendance. The Beta Sigma Phi provided a great breakfast of sausage biscuits with jelly, muffins and fresh cut watermelon, cantaloupe and grapes, and Shari Watt furnished orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. Chair Johnny Tapley introduced Veteran Trey Drawdy, Police Chief of Georgia Southern University, East Georgia State College and Armstrong University. He talked about the transition of our local college coming under GSU’s control and stated that EGSC has hit a record registration of over 2,300 students with nearly 1,000 living in the dorms, and that GSU – Statesboro has reached 30,000 students. Chief Drawdy has organized some of the young students at GSU into helping some veterans in cleaning up their yards in Statesboro.

Chair Johnny introduced three of the Female Veterans Cup Golf team members and presented them with their pink caps and t-shirts, Rita Faulkner, Sandra Bailes and Windy Ward. Those not pictured are Jane Durden and Marsha Riner. After Chair Johnny closed out the meeting, he traveled to the Emanuel County Voter Registration office and registered for the upcoming Mayor of Swainsboro’s race. Congratulations Johnny in getting involved! As part of the Veterans at the Library, they have Swainsboro City Councilman, Veteran Julian Sconyers, and Adrian Mayor, Veteran Sandra Bailes. They also have two members that have run for office on the Swainsboro City Council in the past, Veteran James Mason and Veteran Malachi Lockett.
