On Sunday, September 27, the Brier Creek Artillery consisting of five cannons and 10 crew members, traveled to Lincolnton to attend the grave marking of five American Revolutionary War Patriots. Those Skunkers were Commander Steve Burke, Dess Smith III, Lee Herron, Don Bazemore, Alton McCloud, Bernard Martin, Bernard Martin II, Benjamin Martin, Ben Creech, Tommy Chapelle, and Emil Decker. After the Church service at St. Paul’s Church, the event was conducted inside because of rain. During the ceremony, each patriot’s biography was read. After the dedication of the Grave Markers, wreaths were presented from over 50 organizations and then mourn muskets was presented by 35 members of the SAR dressed in period uniforms. Taps was then played by Compatriot Don Bazemore on his bugle. Including the militia, Award Winning Georgia Society Color Guard and Brier Creek Artillery, there were 35 SAR members participating. The Patriots that had their graves marked were Hezekiah Bussey, Zachariah Spiers/Spires, Isaac Cliatt, Moses Jones and William Norman. The Little River Chapter organized and carried out the event.
