The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting at the Library Monday morning, January 12, at 9 a.m. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 42 in attendance. The “RED BOX” furnished the McDonald sausage biscuits and Shari furnished the grits and bananas and orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. Chair Johnny introduced LaPortia Mosley, the Community Engagement Officer with the Georgia Historical Society in Savannah, to present her program on Community Archives Initiative Overview. She talked about Partnership meetings, Onsite GHS Presentations, Photo Workshops, Genealogy Workshops, Digitization/Development Events and Collection Showcase. Laportia also talked about her plans to interview Veterans at the Library that would like to tell their story and donate one to three items of their career to the Georgia Historical Society to be digitized and made available to the general public and she will travel to Swainsboro each Monday to meet with a veteran after the Monday morning breakfast to accomplish this project. The Mill Creek Foundation gave a grant of $1,500.00 to the Veterans at the Library to purchase items for the domicile patients at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center and Vet Scotty Newsworthy will deliver the items. Chair Johnny also talked about the upcoming 3rd annual Veterans Cup Golf Tournament to be held on May 16, and they will be looking for hole sponsors for this year’s tournament.
