The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held its weekly meeting Tuesday night, February 3, at Franklin Memorial Library at 12 noon. With President Dianna Wedincamp presiding, they had 15 in attendance including two guests, Martha Cobb and Destiny Wilcher. President Dianna welcomed new members, Jae Tarver and Jimmy Wedincamp. Wedincamp won the Black History Month cookie, Deana Patrick won the Domino’s pizza and Tim Goodman and Bobbie Daughtry won the Chick-fil-A “Cow Party” board games. Deana Patrick introduced Martha Cobb, Oleander District Director 2025-2027, who was the speaker for the evening. The Oleander District is the largest district by land area in the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc., stretching from Swainsboro all the way to St. Mary’s. The district motto is “Better Together Through Beautification, Conservation, and Education”. Martha is a member of the Seedling Garden Club and the Jesup Garden Club. She talked about the projects of the Garden Club of Georgia, the District, and the local garden club. Cobb noted the work with the Botanical Garden in Athens, the refurbishing and rededication of Blue Star and Gold Star markers, efforts to save the Okefenokee Swamp, and locally planting flowers at the Emanuel County Nursing Home. They are currently preparing for the October 2026 Oleander District meeting at the Nordson Center in Swainsboro, “Celebrating America”. Along with celebrating America’s 250th Birthday, they will be celebrating the 2028 100th Anniversary of the Garden Club of Georgia and highlighting the changes in agriculture in the last 250 years. Deana Patrick reported the Franklin Memorial Library staff is meeting to select the children’s books for the painting and decorating of fire hydrants to highlight the chosen books and the project will involve the coordination of a number of groups. She also noted that the Book Lover’s Night (Valentine’s Day) is already full. President Dianna and Circle K’er Destiny Wilcher gave an update on the Spring Fundraiser, the Daddy/Daughter Dance on February 28 at the Georgia Southern University-East Georgia Campus student gym. The GS-EGC Circle K is the co-sponsor. Kiwanis will make cotton candy the day before the dance and will provide popcorn the day of the dance. Circle K is meeting with GS-EGC representatives to finalize the agreement. They have developed an event flyer and set up registration and payment through CashApp and Venmo. More information will be coming.
