Burton speaks to Wiregrass Chapter

The Wiregrass Chapter, Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution held its monthly meeting t February 12, at 6:30 p.m. at McKinney Pond Restaurant in Midville. With President Steve Burke presiding, they had 18 in attendance including guests. President Steve opened the meeting with a welcome and asked 2nd Vice President Gary Mason to open with a prayer. 1st Vice President Alton Reynolds led the Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the SAR. They then enjoyed a great buffet meal of shrimp, corn dodgers, French fries and all the trimmings. President Steve called on Compatriot John Derden for a special celebration of “President’s Day”. After John’s recognition of President’s Day, President Steve then asked Treasurer Bill Carmichael to give the treasurers report. President Steve then called on Registrar Dess Smith to introduce our speaker, Compatriot Allen Burton, who is a History Professor at Augusta State College, a member of the Washington/Wilkes SAR Chapter in Washington, and a retired U.S. Army LTC. His presentation was on “Banastre Tarleton”. After Allen’s outstanding presentation, President Steve presented Allen with a “Certificate of Appreciation”, then talked about the past month’s events and upcoming events. The main event coming up is the 247th Anniversary Brier Creek event on February 27 and 28 at the Brier Creek Battlefield in Screven County. 1st VP Alton then lead the SAR Recessional and 2nd VP Gary closed with the benediction.
