On Friday, March 7, 2025, members of the Wiregrass Chapter, Brier Creek Chapter, and the Little River Chapter Georgia Society Sons of the American Revolution traveled to the Brier Creek Battlefield in Screven County to put on the annual Education Day for students in the surrounding Counties. This year, they had approximately 375 students to participate in the annual program. Those students were from Screven Counties fourth and eighth grade classes. As in the past, they had three stations set up for each one-hour session. Every 20 minutes, each station would rotate clockwise to the next station. At the end of each session, they fired their seven cannons and Don Bazemore “Thunder Lips” would play taps on his bugle. The fourth-grade classes arrived at 9 a.m. and the eighth-grade classes arrived at 10:30 a.m. for their one-hour session. Station one was John Derden who explained what happened at the battlefield on March 3, 1779. Station two was maned by Alton McCloud, Allen Mincey and Bernard Martin who explained to them different weapons, uniforms and black powder procedures. Station three was maned by Steve Burke, Lee Herron and Don Bazemore who talked about the four-eight-foot tables of skins, hats and weapons that were used during the revolutionary period. At the end of every 20-minute session, Alton McCloud would fire his 50-cal. flintlock to signal the change of stations. At 12 p.m., they had adults that came for the Education Day.
