Rountree Stadium saw a couple of firsts last week. For the first time, the Bulldogs played a Tuesday night game against first time opponent, Savannah High School, who joined region 3 this season. The Blue Jackets have been hemorrhaging students the last several years, having played in the larger 5A class, now dropping down to the smallest class A division 2.

The first meeting didn’t go well for Savannah with ECI running away with the game 54-15. The Bulldogs opened up the game putting up 19 points in the first quarter and added 28 more in the second to lead 48-0 at the half. The Bulldogs’ special teams got the Bulldogs on the board first with a safety on a punt try after the defense stopped the game’s opening drive. It didn’t take the offense long to put their first points on the board. Chase Johnson scored his first TD of the game from 4 yards out for a 9-0 Bulldog lead. The special teams got more points for the home team in the opening quarter with a 42-yard field goal by senior kicker Oisin Matthews. Tyler Foreman put the last points up for ECI with a 24-yard run late in the first quarter for a 19-0 Bulldog lead. Ab Marsh got the Bulldogs’ first points of the second quarter from 4 yards out for another ECI touchdown. Jackson Kennedy hit Chase Johnson on an 18-yard pass and catch for the Bulldogs’ second score of the second quarter. Backup quarter back Davis Johnson made the most of his first time under center in the game, hitting a wide-open Daon Bethea in stride for a 40-yard touchdown. LJ Tarver put the icing on the cake late in the quarter splitting the middle of the Bluejacket defense with a 34-yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 48-0 at halftime. The Bulldog defense was ferocious, not allowing the Bluejackets to cross midfield during the first half. With a running clock and most of the starters on the sideline, Savannah put up their first points in the game with 8 in the third and 7 in the fourth for their only points in the game. ECI got their last points of the game early in the fourth quarter when Tarver scored his second touchdown of the game from 10 yards out for a 54-15 lead and win for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs rushed for 201 yards during the game. Ab Marsh led the pack of Dawgs with 68 yards on just 3 carries. LJ Tarver had 7 carries for 59 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyler Foreman, 42 yards and Chase Johnson 41, yards were the other leaders on the ground. Jackson Kennedy was 2-3 for 56 yards with a touchdown and Davis Johnson was 1-1 for 40 yards. James Parker, Chase Johnson and Daon Bethea caught one each with Johnson and Betha hauling in one for touchdowns.
