Lawrence receives Emanuel Farm Bureau scholarship

Emanuel County students Clayton Hood and Emma Lawrence have been named recipients of Georgia Foundation for Agriculture (GFA) Scholarships.

Hood and Lawrence are among 11 graduating high school seniors statewide selected to receive a $3,000 scholarship to attend college. Hood was one of two students to receive an additional $1,500.

Lawrence was also named recipient of the $1,200 Emanuel County Farm Bureau Dolan E. Brown Memorial Scholarship, given to students pursuing a college degree preferably in agriculture or an agricultural related field.

The GFA scholarships recognize deserving and outstanding students pursuing agriculture or ag-related degrees at a college in the University System of Georgia, Berry College or Emmanuel College, or a school in the Technical College System of Georgia.

“These scholarships are an investment in the future of farming in Georgia,” said GFA Board Chairman and GFB President Tom McCall. “The Georgia Foundation for Agriculture and Georgia Farm Bureau are committed to cultivating tomorrow’s agricultural leaders, and we’re eager to see what these deserving students accomplish.”

Hood is the son of Clay and Allison Hood. He is a senior at David Emanuel Academy (DEA) and plans to attend Georgia Southern University and study biology.

Hood is valedictorian of the DEA Class of 2025. Among his numerous academic honors, he is a recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence and the David Emanuel Academy American Citizenship Award. He has earned recognition on the DEA Headmaster’s List, Yearly Honor Roll, All-American Scholar and the National Honor Society.

A three-sport athlete, Hood was named to the GISA all-state football team in 2024 and earned all-region honors in football and baseball the past three years.

Lawrence is the daughter of Shannon and Carol Lawrence. She is a senior at Emanuel County Institute and plans to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and study agricultural education.

An FFA member since 2018, Lawrence served as the Georgia FFA Vice President for the 2024-2025 school year and as a national FFA delegate in 2024. She has been a member of the Georgia Junior Hereford Association since 2019, serving on the GJHA board in 2022-2023, as secretary in 2023-2024 and as vice president for 2024-2025.

She won the Senior Beef Showmanship Champion award at the Georgia Junior National Livestock Show and was a state finalist for diversified livestock proficiency in 2025. She earned honors as a Georgia State Star Farmer in 2024.

The Georgia Foundation for Agriculture scholarships recognize deserving and outstanding students pursuing an agriculture or ag-related degree at an eligible technical college (such as welding, diesel mechanics, vet tech) or college in the University System of Georgia, Berry College or Emmanuel College. Instructions for applying for the 2026-27 scholarships will be posted on the GFA website this fall.
