The Emanuel Retired Educators Association held its October meeting in the Swainsboro Primary School Media Center last week with sixteen members attending. President Verdell Brinson called the meeting to order, and Swainsboro Primary Principal Sarah Tapley provided a warm welcome from the school and thanked EREA members for their years of service and continuing support.

Following a delicious meal provided by the SPS lunchroom, Damien Scott, Emanuel Medical Center CEO, was introduced and provided an enthusiastic update regarding recent developments at the hospital. He reported that the Emergency Room remodel is well underway and will provide a psychiatric safe room, as well as three rooms for Fast Track care. Scott hopes the work will be completed by April 2025. Also announced was the opening of Emanuel Prompt Care in the former Bellamy dental office on Kite Road. The office is open seven days a week and has been used heavily since it opened. Several new staff members have joined Emanuel Medical Center including Hospitalist Dr. Vinh Dong, Dr. Caroline Musa at Swainsboro Internal Medicine, Dr. Sydney McRae at Emanuel Family Medical Center, and Dr. Randy Brown who will specialize in vascular surgery. A new EMC Nursing Home Activities Director, Missy Mills, has been hired, and Scott hopes that renovations at the nursing home will begin next year. Information about the Georgia HEART Program was also shared, and Lynn Brinson is the EMC contact for information on this outstanding program that provides tax benefits for local support of our hospital.

President Brinson reminded members that Georgia Retired Educators Day will be observed Sunday, November 3. She distributed red ribbons and encouraged members to wear them that day when they attend a church of their choice.

The next EREA meeting is set for Wednesday, November 20, at Swainsboro Middle School at noon. Representative Butch Parrish and Senator Max Burns will provide a legislative update.
