The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held its weekly meeting Tuesday night, May 21, at 7 p.m. at the Rustic Grille. With President Cheryl Goodman presiding, they had 25 in attendance, including seven guests, Calder Ward, Erin Ward, Melonie Ward, Zane Scarboro, Judy Wells, Lawson Frye and Peyton Frye. The apple pie, pecan pie, and sweet potato pie, donated by the Club in honor of Jim Daughtry, were won by Judy Wells, Tracy Mason, and Wanda Ellis and David Gribbin won the Domino’s pizza.

On May 7, some members of the Kiwanis Club participated in a planting of a “Moon Tree” at the Fulford Center on the EGSC campus. The “Moon Tree” is a loblolly pine which began as a seed on the Artemis I spaceship which orbited the moon in 2022. The first “Moon Trees” were planted in the 1970’s from seeds that were carried on Apollo 14 as it circled the moon in 1971. The first “Moon Tree” in Georgia was planted in Waycross in the early-to-mid 70’s. Tim Goodman presented the nominations for next year’s officers for the Swainsboro Kiwanis Club. The results of the election were President – Paul Cerpovicz, President-Elect – Dianna Wedincamp, Vice President – Dwight Watt, Immediate Past President – Cheryl Goodman, Secretary – Tim Goodman, Treasurer – David Gribbin, 1-Year Directors – Bobbie Daughtry, Cayla Scarboro, Dess Smith and Mary Ellen Smith, and 2-Year Directors – Jeff Brewer, Petite Garrett, Jeff Palmer and Windy Ward. The program was hosted by Tammy Allen who introduced Lawson Frye, an 8th Grader at Emanuel County Institute. A member of the Junior Beta Club, the Student Advisory Council, and the baseball and football teams, Lawson recently placed first in the State Jr. Beta Club speech contest and presented his speech at the meeting. The requirements of the speech are that it be more than one minute and less than two minutes in length on the topic “A Voyage of Adventure.” Lawson will be presenting his speech at the June 10, National Jr. Beta Convention in Savannah. Lawson’s parents are Peyton and Brooke Frye.
