The Glad Garden Club held its regular meeting on February 12, at 10 a.m. at the Sudie A. Fulford Community Learning Center. Meeting was called to order by President JoAnn Trammell followed by an inspirational message by Sylvia Durden referencing Psalm 4, “As God is always within our reach”. Following her message, an informative and interesting program was delivered by George Elder. George and Missy Elder are former recipients of the Swainsboro OurTown Hero award recognizing their countless volunteer hours to various organizations and causes. George has been a member of the Twin City Lions Club, served on the Pine Tree Festival and served on the Board of Directors of the Swainsboro-Emanuel County Festival Foundation. George continues to be active in the Emanuel County Historic Preservation Society serving as President. His current campaign involves “Keep Emanuel Beautiful”, a non-profit organization that meets the third Tuesday of every month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, March 19, at the County Commissioner’s Room in the Coleman Hotel. George’s program involved presenting plans to reduce litter along with recycling and beautification of Swainsboro. You have probably seen his anti-litter signs throughout the county. There is a mascot and intentions to have a billboard campaign in the future. Along with anti-litter campaigns, there are plans for beautification involving community gardens and other tentative programs.

Glad Garden Club received thank you notes from the Sunshine House not only for our financial support but for participating in annual recognition dinner. Thank you also received from the Miss Emanuel County/Miss Southeast Georgia Scholarship Board for the clubs Emerald Level donation. Arbor Day Certificates were received from the Arbor Day Foundation in recognition of Sylvia Durden’s participation in the planting of trees. Club member Sylvia Durden also had a brief horticulture presentation regarding the planting and caring for “airplane plants’ and presented each member with a baby plant to try and grown their own at home.

Club members made plans for our annual fundraiser along with committees assigned for our participation in the 2024 Pine Tree Festival and Southeast Timber Expo. There is also an upcoming flower show presented by the Seedling Garden Club in which the Glad Garden Club assists and participates in not only the labeling of specimens and other assigned duties but the presentation of flora for competition. See you at the show!

Glad Garden Club adjourned to the Rustic Grille for lunch.

The Glad Garden Club is a member of the Deep South Region of the National Garden Clubs, Inc., and the Oleander District of the Garden Club of Georgia, Inc.
