So, exactly why do we celebrate the 4th of July? Apparently, colonists had enough of King Geroge III’s tyranny. We had departed Great Brition in 1607 and now 168 years later, we had no say in our self-government. King George taxed colonists unfairly, especially your tea. Remember the Boston Tea Party from your history class? He allowed the quartering of British troops in own private homes.
Finally in 1775, war broke out. The idea of declaring independence from Great Brition was a collective one but Thomas Jefferson is credited with writing the first draft. It took two months to write The Declaration and on July 4, 1776, it was ratified. Georgia delegates were Button Gwinnett from Liberty County, Lyman Hall from Chatham County and later, Burke County and George Walton from Chatham County.
Recently seen in Swainsboro was a sign that said, “Happy 4th! Salute Our Heroes”. These men were truly heroes! They made a bold statement that God made all men equal and gave these the rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. And rest of the story is… let’s eat some BBQ and enjoy some fireworks.
As we celebrate Independence Day, let’s remember how blessed we are to be a part of the great nation, the United States of America.
Leanna Scarboro, nine-year-old daughter of Scrap Scarboro and Heather Scarboro, shows off her artistic side by drawing an American Flag with sidewalk chalk to celebrate Independence Day.
The Forest-Blade will be closed Friday, July 4. We hope everyone has a fun and safe Independence Day.
