Just think, in the next few weeks, we won’t have to cut our grass every week or complain about the heat, but it also means our favorite creature, the ruby-throated hummingbird, will be leaving us. They will be returning to Central America or Mexico and won’t return until March 2026. The good news is many do return to the same feeders and resting locations year after year. Hummingbirds possess excellent long-term memories and can recognize individual human faces and remember people who feed them.
Male adults are the first to leave, and some of them by the end of August. Females and those hatched this year follow later. Last year, the last hummingbird observed in Emanuel County was October 10.
