On Police Memorial Day, the citizens of Twin City remember the life and legacy of former Police Chief Charles Oglesby.
On December 20, 1968, Chief Oglesby was tragically shot and killed while assisting in the apprehension of a suspect who had stabbed a state trooper during a traffic stop earlier that week. Chief Oglesby, alongside several state troopers and bloodhounds, was tracking the suspect along Georgia Highway 192 when they encountered him. The suspect, a former patient of the state mental hospital, opened fire with a shotgun, fatally striking Chief Oglesby. The suspect was subsequently killed.
To this day, many in Twin City remember Chief Oglesby—affectionately known as “Mr. Charlie”—as a father, friend, and dedicated member of the community. His name is often spoken with respect and reverence, and personal stories continue to be shared in his honor. These moments serve as powerful reminders of his courage, his service, and the sacrifice he made in the line of duty.
Chief Oglesby’s police hat still rests in City Hall, a solemn symbol of the ultimate price he paid while protecting his community.
