Isabel Ward Sego, age 89, went to her heavenly home peacefully Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at home under the care of her daughter, Gail, with assistance from Ogeechee Hospice. Funeral service will be held Sunday, July 13, at 2 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter with Rev. Gregory Ely officiating. Family will receive friends Sunday, July 13, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Emanuel County.
Born and raised in Metter, to John Lee Ward and Evelyn Donaldson Ward, Isabel was the first-born of six children. She spent her early years on the family farm in Ollifftown picking cotton. Isabel attended Rosemary School and New Beulah Church. She was just 16 when she ran off and eloped with the love of her life, Carl Sego. Carl had proposed with the words “Isabel, if you marry me, I will show you the world.” And Carl, the Air Force Sergeant, did just that with Isabel and their two children, Doug and Gail, in tow.
Their travels took them to New York, Germany, Alabama, Turkey, California and Colorado. Isabel worked as a hostess for the NCO club while they were stationed in Ankara, Turkey. She then worked for Ampex in Redwood City, California and then transferred to Ampex in Colorado Springs, Colorado, retiring after 20 years as Audio Visual Equipment Supervisor. Upon retiring, Isabel and Carl moved back to Georgia right down the road from her Mama, brothers and sisters. Carl and Isabel became members of Willow Lake Country Club and Carl, the avid golfer, played golf every single day while Isabel played cards at the club with her friends.
Isabel was a good cook and would always have breakfast ready by 6 a.m. sharp! That was followed by a full dinner, and it didn’t matter if you were invited or not, she would welcome you to join in. And it didn’t matter who you were, gardener, painter, UPS, she’d always say “Dinner is ready”, come and get it.
Isabel loved to crochet and made many blankets and doilies. She was also an avid gardener always looking for new flowers to plant. If you saw her coming with her pruning shears, you knew she was going to get a clipping from one of your plants to plant in her garden. When she wasn’t at home, her and Carl were off again on another excursion. They loved traveling and visiting new places. Awaiting Mrs. Sego in heaven are her husband, Carl Sego; her parents, John Lee Ward and Mary Evelyn Ward; sisters, Mary Ellen Gay and Sarah Lee Mills; a niece and several infant nieces and nephew.
Mrs. Sego will be missed by her two children, Doug Sego (Sarah) of California and Gail Olivo (Ken) of California; grandchildren, Bryan Sego, Brandon Olivo (Jamie) and Briana Olivo (Justin); step-grandson, Richard Hormaza; great-grandchildren, Constantine Sego, Rowan Sego, Camden Painter, Rylan Painter and Vincent Olivo; brothers, J.L Ward, Jr., (Martha) and James Edward Ward (Gail); sister, Pam Miller (Bobby); many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly; dear friend, Jackie Parker; and special niece, Angie Ely.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Ogeechee Area Hospice, 200 Donahoo St., Statesboro, GA.
Kennedy Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter is in charge of arrangements.
