Mike Wammock, age 85, passed away Saturday, September 13, 2025, in Brunswick. His life will be celebrated by his immediate family in a private service.
Born to Milo and Trannie Trapnell Wammock on May 15, 1940, Mike grew up in Adrian. He attended Adrian High School and Emory University in Atlanta, then married his beloved wife, Judy Jackson Wammock, and raised four children in Swainsboro. In Swainsboro, Mike was co-owner of Wammock Furniture Company, served on the Franklin Memorial Library Board, was active in the Swainsboro Jaycees, and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a long-time executive and shareholder at Motel Properties based on Jekyll Island, Georgia, and later retired to Brunswick.
Mike loved sports and played basketball through high school and into adulthood. A member of the Swainsboro Country Club, he played golf like it was going out of style. (He made a hole in one at a 2003 tournament on Jekyll Island and has a plaque to prove it!) He was a die-hard fan of Georgia Bulldogs and Atlanta Falcons football and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Mike was gifted with a curious mind and a lifelong appetite for learning. An avid reader and history buff, he frequently corrected guides at Civil War battlefield sites. He loved a range of music, from Mahler and Beethoven to Queen and Led Zeppelin, and was a tireless curator of dad jokes. He also loved photo-documenting his family members’ day-to-day lives and left behind approximately 37,000 boxes of slides.
To those who knew him, Mike was patient and accommodating; as he put it, he was “a go-along to get along guy.” But he also personified the best aspirations of his generation: loyalty, respect for honor and integrity, and boundless love. His kindness was instinctively felt by friends and family and will be deeply missed. Mr. Wammock is preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 61 years, Judy; and his son, James Michael (Jim) Wammock, Jr.
Survivors include his children, Gina Wammock (Eric Rothstein) of Black Mountain, North Carolina, Chris Wammock (Stephanie) of Laveen, Arizona and Laurie Karagul (Gurkan) of Brunswick; grandchildren, Jessica Walker (Areon), Aaron Wammock, Dylan Wammock, Wes Wammock (Suzanne), Morgan Rich, Nicholas Karagul and Matthew Karagul; great-grandchildren, Addi Lyn Rich, Gray Rich and Adrian Walker; sister, Becky Rountree of Atlanta; and many nieces and nephews.
The family gives thanks to the staff of Addington Place and Visiting Angels, both of Brunswick, for their kindness and care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: Franklin Memorial Library, 331 West Main Street, Swainsboro, GA 30401.
