The Veterans at the Library held their weekly meeting Monday morning, October 27, at 9 a.m. at the Library. With Chair Johnny Tapley presiding, they had 31 in attendance. Shari Watt provided a fantastic breakfast consisting of pancakes, syrup and sausage, and cut up fruit, orange juice, cranberry juice, grape juice, apple juice and coffee. Chair Johnny Tapley introduced the speaker, Veteran Scotty Nasworthy. Scotty talked about the upcoming “Wreaths Across America” project on December 13 with November 29 being the Saturday that they put the U.S. Flags on each veteran’s graves. Scotty also talked about the 15 veterans that are buried in the City Cemetery, but they don’t know where. Scotty is working on actual overhead photos of each section of the Swainsboro City Cemetery and other cemeteries in the county that will show the exact location of each veteran grave. Scotty said that he should know in the next three weeks the day that the wreaths will arrive so they can pass them out to the helpers that are placing wreaths on other cemeteries in the county. Scotty was asked questions about the local option one cent sales tax that will be voted on November 4, and he explained the tax. If voted on starting in 2027, it will lower property taxes dollar-for-dollar and will run for five years until 2032. You can early vote as of today up until Friday, October 3, and the regular voting day will be November 4. If you need a ride to vote, please contact Rev. James Mason at 912-405-4800 and he will be glad to pick you up and take you back home at no charge. Chair Johnny talked about celebrating Veterans Day on Saturday, November 8, at Harmons Park at 11 a.m. There will be a short ceremony and firing of the Brier Creek Artillery and playing taps.
