The East Fall Line Region Continentals and SAR members from both Georgia and South Carolina traveled to Augusta, Georgia to participate in the 242nd Anniversary Commemoration of the 1st Siege of Augusta that was fought on September 12-18, 1780.
The event was held at the Kroc Center on September 17, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. After the Welcome by LTC (ret) Sonny Pittman, the Advancement of Colors was led by Combined Color Guard of the Georgia and South Carolina Societies SAR and commanded by Bill Palmer. The Pledges were then held and following the Greetings, the presentation of the "Battle Seminar" was given by Steven Rauch, Military Historian. The Presentation of Wreaths was conducted by William J. Tankersley, Vice President, East Fall Line Region, GASSAR.
There was a total of 62 wreaths presented. Taps was played and the Color Guard presented "Mourn Muskets" to honor those killed in the battle. The Retrieval of Colors to the Battlefield for the Battle re-enactment was conducted by the Color Guard Commander Bill Palmer. The re-enactment was held on the field behind the Kroc Center between the old Confederate Powder Works.
The re-enactment was between the British, commanded by Col. Thomas Brown (Steve Burke) and the American Patriots, commanded by Col. Elijah Clarke (Alton Reynolds). The British on this Commemoration day had approximately 10 infantry armed with 50 cal. Flintlock Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifles, 69 Cal. Flintlock Charleville Muskets and 75 Cal. Flintlock Brown Bess Muskets. Also a 6-pounder Naval Cannon and a 6-pounder Field Gun.
The American patriots on this Commemoration day had approximately 10 infantry armed with 50 Cal. Flintlock Pennsylvania/Kentucky rifles and 75 Cal. Flintlock Brown Bess Muskets. Also a 6-pounder Field Gun and a 8-pounder Field Gun. The result of the battle was a draw. The event was sponsored by the Colonel William few Chapter GASSAR and the Henry Laurens Chapter SCSSAR.
