Mrs. Annette Claxton Ivey was born March 5, 1926 at home on the Claxton Farm. She was the youngest of nine siblings: Leon Claxton, Maude Claxton Brantley, Maggie Claxton Brantley, Jonah Claxton, Buren Claxton, Comer Claxton, Nora Claxton Proctor, and Willouise Claxton Spivey. Mrs. Ivey graduated from Kite High School as valedictorian in 1943. For many years, she worked in the home, caring for her family and others. Later, she served as the secretary of Kite Elementary School, retiring after 19 years of service. She poured herself into her family, her community, and her beloved church, Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church, for which she served as clerk for many years. She was a founding member of the Kite Homemakers Club and was known far and wide for her infamous red velvet cakes. Mrs. Ivey was a woman of faith—a woman who never expressed her own wants but always used God as her compass, asking God for the strength, kindness, and wisdom, with which she led her family. Kite Prayer Group “Mama,” as she was known by most, both within her family and amongst her community, was the loving mother to five children, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 11 great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her children include Sandra Ivey Anderson (Gene), Nick Ivey (Diane), Jimmy Ivey (Vicki), Judy Ivey Scott (Joel), and Lisa Ivey Troup (Chris). Her grandchildren include Robyn Anderson Foskey (Jay), Christy Anderson, Sherry Ivey Rowland (Joey), Bruce Ivey (Misty), Ginny Ivey Price (Todd), Denise Ivey Wombles (Shawn), Todd Ivey (Danielle), Amy Scott Jackson (Ben), Pratt Scott (Kristin), Michelle Troup, and Allison Troup. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 74 years, George N. Ivey Jr., and her parents, Lenora and Zachariah William Claxton.
Pallbearers will be Nick Ivey, Jimmy Ivey, Joel Scott, Chris Troup, Bruce Ivey, Todd Ivey, Chris Anderson, and Pratt Scott. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and members of Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staff and residents of Greenplace and to Mrs. Marie Coleman, who kept Mama looking her very best.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Gumlog Primitive Baptist Church, P.O. Box 176, Kite, Georgia 31049.
