Burke Speaks to Brier Creek Chapter, SAR

On Thursday night, August 4, 2022, the Brier Creek Chapter held its monthly meeting at Walls Diner in Sylvania at 7 p.m. with Sgt-at-Arms Don Bazemore presiding. There were 11 members in attendance.

After a great supper, SAA Bazemore asked dual member Emory Fennell to lead the group in the Pledge to the U.S. Flag and the Pledge to the SAR. Dual member Dess Smith then gave a report on the previous 132nd National Society Sons of the American Revolution Congress that was held on July 9-14, 2022. Of a particular interest at the event was their very own Compatriot Steve Burke holding the pillow that was holding George Washington's Ring before it was presented to the 2022-23 President General Bruce Pickette.

SAA Bazemore then introduced Compatriot Steve Burke who then presented his program on "The Battle at Trenton". Steve told the gathering that this battle was held on the early morning of December 26, 1776. General Washington had crossed the Delaware River with his Continental Army and attached the Hessian auxiliaries that were stationed at Trenton. The Hessian's were surprised, and the battle was very short. The Continental Army strength was 2,400 with the Hessian's at 1,500. The casualties and losses for the Continental army were two frozen to death and five wounded and the Hession's were 22 killed, 83 wounded and 800-900 captured. A lot of the Continental Army's enlistments were up this month, but because of the great victory, it boasted the morale and most of the soldiers re-enlisted and new recruits were attracted to the ranks.”
