Chamber Member Spotlight: Mill Pond Kayak

Mill Pond Kayak was founded in 2009 by Wesley Hendley.

After earning a zoology degree from the University of Georgia in 1983, Hendley’s career path led to 25 years as a manufacturing engineer. Upon retiring in 2009, he decided to return to his original interests and founded Mill Pond Kayak.

With a lifelong history of hunting, fishing, camping, and enjoying a variety of water-related outdoor activities, this was a perfect fit. He says that kayaking is a unique way to exercise the body while relaxing the mind. Hendley especially enjoys helping people create memorable experiences with friends and family while developing an appreciation for the natural beauty in the midst.

Mill Pond Kayak offers guided tours on the paddling trails of George L. Smith State Park’s historic 412-acre mill pond and occasionally on other waterways including the Ogeechee and Ohoopee rivers. Kayaks, paddles, and PFD vests are provided, or you may bring your own. Pictures are taken during each tour at no extra charge. The calm, black water is the perfect venue for kayakers of all ages, and no experience is required. The tours are great for small groups or large, including couples, family and friends, photographers, birthdays, reunions, company picnics, church activities, scout troops, school clubs, and more. Come see birds nesting in spring, start a summertime water fight, or enjoy the colorful reflections of fall.

Mill Pond Kayak’s mission is to be safe, enjoy, and have fun! The company values going the extra mile to ensure that each visitor has a great experience. If anyone doesn’t have a good time, the tour is free. (So far, everyone has paid.) When asked why Mill Pond Kayak is a chamber member, Hendley, founder and sole operator, stated he feels it’s important to support the chamber’s efforts to serve the business community and grow the local economy. This improves the quality of life for all our citizens. In turn, the chamber offers resources and helps to promote his business.

Hendley is heavily involved in the community, holding current and past positions in several organizations. He is a member of Georgia’s Classic South Travel Association and a board member of Historic Twin City, Georgia, Inc. He previously served on the chamber board as chairman of the Tourism Committee and is a former board member of the Development Authority of Twin City and Friends of George L. Smith State Park.

An interesting fact about Hendley is that after almost 12 years in business, he’s paddled more than 5,000 miles and is quite sure at least 1,000 of them have been while going backwards!
