Church of the Week: Nunez Baptist

Located in Nunez, Nunez Baptist Church is home to many members of the Nunez and surrounding area’s community.

Founded in 1907, the original church’s membership met in a two-room schoolhouse with Reverend Lige Williams. The first-ever revival service held only 10 candidates and at the end of the service, the individuals came forward for baptism and became the first members of Nunez Baptist Church.

After a small period of time, the church recessed until it was reorganized by Reverend C.L. Phillips in 1934 after Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Deloach gave the property where Nunez Baptist sits today.

Currently, Nunez Baptist is led by Pastor Jim Harrell, who preaches and shows God’s love through everything he does. “God’s love changed the direction of my life. Understanding God’s love for me and the gift of His Son Jesus Christ to me lead me to salvation and motivates me share God’s love to others,” he said.

NBC also operates with the help of its deacons, which include Chairman Courtney Terwilliger, Donnie McNeely, Larry Calhoun, Ricky Thompson, Tommy Kirby, Noot Irvin, and Matt Snellgrove.

Music plays a huge part in worship for the NBC family as they are led by their two in-house groups that provide special songs to the congregation. Some that provide songs of worship are Lige Moore, Margo Riner, Emily Gaudry, Donnie McNeely, and Matt Snellgrove.

Recently, the roll has been up to 154 of attendees on each Sunday service but does not include those who view each service at home on Facebook Live. NBC has three regular services that you can attend each week. Prior to COVID-19, attendance numbers have gone down 50 percent.

These services include 10 a.m. on Sunday, followed by 11 a.m. morning worship service. On Wednesday evenings, NBC has Bible study and prayer meeting at 7 p.m. Periodically, the youth meet on Sunday afternoons.
