Co-defendant in child abuse case sentenced

Brandy Lee, a 34-year-old co-defendant in child abuse case that happened in 2019, was sentenced in Emanuel County Superior Court on June 9.

According to court documents finalized with the clerk’s office last Friday, June 18, Lee negotiated a guilty plea on two counts second-degree child cruelty in case 19-CR-82. Consequently, she was sentenced to 15 years with five to be served in confinement and the remainder on probation.

“I would like to express my appreciation to Swainsboro Police Department for their hard work on this case. For the sake of the child and her loved ones, I’m glad the cases against these defendants are over so they may have closure,” said Tripp Fitzner, district attorney for the Middle Judicial Circuit.

The case unfolded more than two years ago on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Latitude 105 apartment complex on North Anderson Drive. Lee left her 3-month-old daughter in the care of boyfriend Brandon Woods, 39-years-old at the time, who sexually and physically abused the baby girl. Woods called 911 for help, and first responders arrived to find the child unresponsive. She was then taken to Emanuel Medical Center and resuscitated before being flown to another medical facility in Augusta to recover.

The co-defendants were then taken into custody. Woods faced several charges, including one count aggravated battery, three counts first-degree child cruelty, two counts second-degree child cruelty, one count possession of methamphetamine, and one count possession of drug-related objects. He would negotiate guilty pleas on all those charges in an Emanuel County Superior Court in October 2019, resulting in a total sentence of 40 years with the first 20 to serve and the remainder on probation.

Lee, on the other hand, was immediately charged with child cruelty for her negligence. Little would develop in the case until her sentencing until two weeks ago.

In case 19-CR-82, Lee also faced an additional count of second-degree child cruelty as well as three counts first-degree child cruelty. All four of those counts were deemed not pros.

Also in the April 2021 term of Emanuel County Superior Court held June 9, Falentha Antonio Carswell was found guilty on one count possession of methamphetamine. He was sentenced to three years probation.
