Dawgs fall in State Title to Charlton County
By Justin Gray
The ECI Bulldogs Baseball team walked on the field at Georgia Southern University with a State Title on the line. Both squads brought their A-game in this matchup of the top 2 teams in the state. Game one, Senior Bryce Kearson took the mound for the last time as a Dawg and he showed out. He went six innings allowing two hits and allowing three runs, none of those earned. The Dawgs fell short in this one 3-1 as they never could really get the offense going.
In game two, with their season on the line the Dawgs stepped up to the plate. They capitalized on Freshman Tuff Boddiford’s big day in their game two 5-4 win as he drove in four. A huge moment in the game was when the Dawgs were trailing by a run and Kearson stepped into the box and delivered a solo homer to tie it. Lawson Mercer got the start in this one, he went three innings while allowing three runs. Jacob Durden relieved him by going the last four innings allowing one lone run in the Bulldogs victory. The series split so that meant all that was left was a winner-take-all game three. This is what sports are about battling with everything you got while battling for all the glory.
Game three was destined to be a good one. Mercer got the ball again for the Dawgs, but they used several pitchers as many teams do in game three’s. This one didn’t go well for the Dawgs as they were shutout 5-0 and finished as State Runner-ups! This has been the most impressive and successful season in school history so these boys have nothing to hang their heads about and will be back with vengeance next season.
The Dawgs say goodbye to Jacob Durden, Lawson Mercer, Bryce Kearson, and PJ Farnum, congrats on what you accomplished guys and good luck on your future endeavors. This team was young and they are destined to be back.
Congratulations from The Crossroads Chronicle on the amazing season Bulldogs!
