DEA softballers conclude weeklong camp with alumni game

Last week, David Emanuel Academy participated in yet another Higher Ground Softball Camp and used the fundamentals they learned as the team took on a sizable opponent in DEA softball alumni.

For many years now, the DEA program has looked to Bobby Simpson and his company, Higher Ground Softball, for quality instruction prior to the start of every softball season. He, former University of Georgia standout Anna Swafford, and former Georgia College player Haley Howell came last week to Swainsboro-Emanuel County Recreation Department and the Georgia Sports Arena in Swainsboro to help the Lady Eagles get in shape for the alumni game, another annual event for the program, at the end of the week as well as the upcoming season as a whole.

During the one-day camp, the team and its visitors worked on hitting, fielding, baserunning, pitching, catching, team-building, and other necessary aspects of the game.

On Wednesday, July 21, some almost 10 alumni, including 2021-2022 team’s coaching duo of Gabrielle Story and Laura Cardell Webb, came out to the local rec department on McLeod Bridge Road and scrimmaged the current roster. In the end, the alumni won by a score of 6-1.
