Dove Season is Here!

By Justin Gray

Pictured are cousins, Clay Holloway and Jackson Moore. Clay is the 4 year old son of Huston and Courtney Holloway of Metter. Jackson is the 7 year old son of Preston and Casey Moore of Metter. They are the the grandchildren of John Paul and Monica Johnson of Portal, owners of Johnson Farms in Portal. The Johnson’s son, Payton Johnson, plants, tends to and prepares the dove field each year for his siblings, nieces and nephews to enjoy the hunt!

If you are from the south or live here you know that dove season is major in this part of America. Last year, the DNR estimated about 13,000 people hunted doves and bagged about 101,000 doves, the most since the season was re-opened in 2004.

Dove season has become very popular and continues to grow every year. Hunters go sit in the fields and wait for their doves to come in and then light them up when they do. This is one of the most fun game birds to hunt. The season closes on October 9 and doesn’t reopen until November 19. How many will you get?
