Dr. Betty Yeomans Brown, 79

Dr. Betty Yeomans Brown, 79, of Swainsboro passed away Monday, April 24, 2023, at Emanuel Medical Center following a brief illness. Funeral services were at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Nunez Baptist Church with Reverend Jim Harrell and Reverend Mark Sweat officiating. The family received friends from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at Nunez Baptist Church.

Mrs. Betty was born July 20, 1943, in Metter to the late Herman Grady Yeomans, Jr. and Frances Cowart Yeomans. Mrs. Betty was a member of Nunez Baptist Church. Dr. Betty Yeomans Brown graduated Swainsboro High School in 1961. She went on to receive her Master’s in Education in 1972 from Georgia Southern College. She further received her degree as an Education Specialist in 1976. From there, she became employed by Emanuel County Schools where she filled many roles in the education system. She was a math teacher and a high school counselor for her Alma Mater. Then, she filled the role of System Curriculum Director before becoming the first female and last elected Superintendent of Emanuel County schools in 1983. Dr. Betty Brown retired with 32 years of service in the education system in 1999.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, H. G. Yeomans, III.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, James Brown of Swainsboro; sons, Patrick (Kimbie) Brown of Swainsboro, Terry Brown of Augusta, Brian (Megan) Brown of Okeechobee, FL; grandchildren, Bo Brown, Lexsy Brown, Brody Brown, Grady Brown; sisters-in-law. Carol Yeomans of Swainsboro, Paulette Brown McNeal (Ellis) of Waycross; brother-in-law, Harrison Brown of Swainsboro; several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Pallbearers were Russ Yeomans, Blake Adams, Jeff Jenco, Harrison Brown, Peyton Edenfield, Brad Hooks, Courtney Terwilliger, and Henry Terwilliger.

Honorary pallbearers were “Friday Girls” - Jamie Lawrence, Jean Schwabe, Roberta Strong, Martha Flanders Candy Powers, Bobbie Collins, Barbara Stokes, Petite Garrett, Faye Hall, Erma Jenkins, Terri Burke, Sara Lumley, Linda Sconyers, Donna Godowns, Bea Hausley, Gail McRae, and Angela McClellan; and special friend, Carolyn Williams.
