Dr. Cheek to give endowed lecture

The Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization (AHI) at Hamilton College is pleased to announce that Dr. H. Lee Cheek Jr., Professor of Political Science and former dean at East Georgia State College, will deliver the 2022 David Aldrich Nelson Lecture in Constitutional Jurisprudence. He will speak on “The Antifederalists and American Liberty.” The event will take place at AHI headquarters (21 West Park Row, Clinton, New York) on Sunday, September 18, at 5 p.m.

He previously served as dean of the School of Social Sciences at the University of North Georgia; as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Athens State University in Alabama; and Vice President for College Advancement and Professor of Political Science at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon.

Pi Gamma Mu, the International Honor Society in the Social Sciences, bestowed upon Dr. Cheek the society’s Outstanding Alumni Award in 2017. In 2020, the Georgia Political Science Association conferred the James T. LaPlant Award for excellent in teaching and mentoring in political science upon Dr. Cheek.

He has been a congressional aide and a political consultant as well. Dr. Cheek’s many books include The Founding of the American Republic (Notre Dame University Press, 2023 [forthcoming]).

A reception and open house will precede the lecture from 4 to 5 p.m. at the AHI.

The annual lecture honors David Aldrich Nelson (1932-2010), a charter member of the AHI’s Board of Directors.

Judge Nelson graduated from Hamilton College in 1954 as valedictorian of his class. He attended Harvard Law School and read law as a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University in England, and he served with distinction as a federal judge from 1985 to 2006 on the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
