ECI golf team competes in state championship

On a crisp, almost fall-like morning along the shores of Lake Oconee, the ECI golf team arrived on the tee box to begin a quest for the 2021 GHSA Class A Golf State Championship.

The two-day tournament held May 17 and May 18 at The National Course at Reynolds Plantation hosted 12 men’s teams as well as individuals who placed as low medalists in their region events.

The ECI men’s team consisted of Bailey Sauce, Ethan Holloway, Kendall Wiggins, Bryson Barrett, and Austin Robertson. Anna Kate Beasley competed as an individual.

The hilly terrain of the Piedmont Region of Georgia is very different from the flat, coastal Plain the golfers are used to in the Emanuel area, so the course was a real challenge for the team. When the final putt fell, the ECI men’s team placed ninth in the state with Anna Kate Beasley, in her first state appearance, placing 25th.

Retiring coach Mike Williams told The Chronicle that after not having a season last year due to COVID, he was very proud of the team and Beasley for making it to the state championship.
