ECI track and field to compete at state

Track season will culminate with state action this week, and Emanuel County Institute will be well represented at the last round of running and field events as all but one competitor qualified to advance this past weekend.

Sectionals took place at Montgomery County High School in Mount Vernon on Saturday, May 7. Total, six athletes and two relay teams finished in the top eight of their respective categories and will therefore move on.

Senior Kobi Allen took the first-place spot on the podium after winning the long jump with a distance of 20–9’. He was the only Bulldog on the day to finish first in an individual event.

Jamese Budgett, a junior, and Semya Williams, a senior, had the best finishes on the day for the girls. Budgett took fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.59 seconds while Williams took fourth in the long jump with a distance of 14–9.5’.

Jayna Kearson, a freshman, squeaked out an eighth place finish in two events: the triple jump with a distance of 31–8’ and the discus throw with a distance of 72–9’.

Two other Bulldogs, junior Cordarius Lee and junior Joseph Conner, placed well enough to move on, too. Lee took fifth in the long jump with a distance of 19–10’ while Conner threw the discus 106–11.5’ for seventh place.

ECI’s best showing, however, was the girls’ relay runs. The 4x100 meter team came in first, crossing the finish line in just 52.04 seconds. The 4x200 meter team took second with a time of 1:52:78.

Blake Hughes, a junior, finished 11th in the 3200 meter run.

The state meet will take place May 12 through May 14 at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
