EGSC announces January 2021 Students of the Month
East Georgia State College launched the Student of the Month Program in Fall 2020. The program gives faculty and staff at EGSC the opportunity to nominate students based on one or more of the following criteria: commitment to academic growth, engagement in the college community, and contribution to an inclusive and supportive environment. Three students will be selected to represent EGSC’s campuses and online degree programs per month. Each student selected will receive a certificate signed by the EGSC president and goodie bag. Additionally, video interviews will be on EGSC’s social media platforms.
For the month of January 2021 from the Swainsboro campus, Sanjay Narsee was named Student of the Month. Allison Mainer was selected from the Statesboro campus, and Dana Vo was chosen from the Augusta campus.
Narsee attends EGSC’s Swainsboro campus and is an international student originally from South Africa. He moved to Swainsboro because he had family in town and wanted to further his education. Narsee is a sophomore, and his favorite class is economics. He has also shown interest in accounting and English classes. His favorite thing about EGSC is the warm, welcoming feel of the college. He said EGSC feels like a family to him especially after having to leave some of his family behind in South Africa. He is a member of the Student Government Association, the International Club, and completed the Student Leadership Program. Narsee plans to finish his degree at EGSC and re-enter the workforce in the food or business sector.
Mainer, the Statesboro Student of the Month, is from the Statesboro area. She chose to attend EGSC because it was close to home and she liked the one-on-one learning approach. She is in her second year of courses and said she has shown the most interest in her mathematics courses. Mainer’s favorite thing about EGSC is the opportunity to reach out to faculty and staff and get help when it is needed. When asked what it means to her to receive this award, she said she is honored that her hard work is paying off, especially with the difficulties COVID-19 has caused. She plans to transfer to Georgia Southern University in the fall to major in child and family development.
The Augusta Student of the Month, Vo, is from Augusta. She is a freshman in her second semester at the college. Vo said she chose EGSC because of the college’s affordability and it was close to home for her. She said her favorite course so far at EGSC is English 1102. In the class, she discovered her love of writing. She said being selected as Student of the Month is very flattering and so unexpected. She plans to get her associates degree at EGSC and continue her education at Augusta University, where she plans to major in business administration.
The EGSC Student of the Month Program personalizes the student experience and cultivates a positive school culture where students feel valued. The awards present an opportunity for the college community to demonstrate EGSC values through an investment in the success of students with diverse backgrounds, strengths, and interests. The EGSC Student of the Month Award recognizes students who represent excellence within the EGSC community. Selection of students is based on commitment to academic growth, engagement in the college community, and contribution to an inclusive and supportive academic environment. Up to three awards are selected each month: the goal is to represent the range of students enrolled across the college’s campuses and online programs. Potential awardees may be submitted by faculty and staff.
