EGSC softball begins season

The East Georgia State College Lady Bobcat softball team opened the 2022 season in Clearwater, Florida, playing in the Junior College Kickoff Classic.

The Lady Bobcats’ varsity team went 51 on the weekend. Leading the way for the team was Ashleigh Miles, Mackenzie Wilkerson, Summer Alexander, Sierra Taylor, Alyssa Barbrick, and Alexis McQuaig.

Miles led the Lady Bobcats with 3 homeruns, 3 doubles, 8 RBIs, and pitched three winning games, allowing only 4 total runs while on the hill in 16 innings of work.

Wilkerson and Alexander had 6 RBIs each to add to the Bobcats’ total offensive output of 34 runs in six games.

Defensively, Taylor made dynamic plays in the outfield for East Georgia with Alexander providing great infield play at first.

Wilkerson had another stellar weekend behind the plate with no passed balls allowed and 2 runners thrown out attempting to steal second.

The freshmen played well in the tournament but could not string together enough hits to pull through against the tough Florida junior college sophomore-dominated teams.

“We played outstanding this weekend. We were the only team from outside Florida that was able to compete with the Florida colleges day in and day out over the 3-day tournament, and that simply proves how far our program has come in just 12 years of existence. Our varsity team is very good when we are hitting on all cylinders, and our freshmen team got valuable playing experience against tremendously talented junior college teams,” said Head Coach Chuck Wimberly after Sunday’s wins against Saint Petersburg College and Pasco College. “It’s just the start of the season, but what a tremendously great way to begin our 2022 softball campaign.”
