Elders speak to Kiwanis
The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held its weekly meeting, Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at the Rustic Grille at 7 p.m. with President-elect Tammy Allen presiding. Thirty members were in attendance including six guests, Past Division 17 Lt. Governor Dennis Donahue; George Elder; Missy Elder; Calder Ward; Melanie Ward and Lyndsey Hatfield.
The lemon-lime pound cake, donated and baked by Wanda Ellis was won by Tim Goodman and the Domino's pizza donated by Domino's Pizza was won by Tracy Mason. Past Lt. Governor Dennis Donahue attended as an "interclub" member from the Vidalia Kiwanis Club.
Dennis brought nine tickets to members of the club that are attending the 100th anniversary of the chartering of the Vidalia Kiwanis Club on Friday night, August 19, 2022. The program for the evening was hosted by Jim Clapham and he introduced guests George and Missy Elder, who gave an update on what is happening at the Emanuel County Historic Preservation Society.
ECHPS was started in 1976 in a building behind the old Walmart with the white building at the Fairgrounds opening in 1993. George Elder read a poem he wrote for the 1st Pine Log Echoes. The 1st volume of Echoes, written by Mary Ann Smith and Missy, was released in 2013. Later they released volume 2 and in 2021 Volume 3. Echoes was written to memorialize elements of Emanuel County's disappearing heritage.
The Elders also talked about the Farm and Home Museum, the buildings on the property, and the many displays developed from local donations. They showed a train whistle, which looked like a WWI bomb, and a wooden hay fork.
