Expect longer wait times for passports

Going to travel and need a passport? Emanuel County Clerk of Court Kristin Hall is urging that group of people to act today to ensure what should be a routine service doesn’t interrupt your plans.

Specifically, her message is to citizens who are planning to travel outside the United States and do not currently have a passport or citizens whose passport will expire within the next six to nine months.

“Please get your passport before making plans,” Hall said. “Routine service is now taking up to 18 weeks. Even expedited service is taking 12 weeks. If you have plans to travel in September or October and don’t have a passport and have not applied, you might not be able to travel.”

Previously, citizens could typically expect wait times of four to six weeks for passports. The reason for the delay today, Hall explained, stems from the pandemic; all processing centers have yet to be reopened.

To apply for a passport at the Emanuel County Clerk’s Office, visit the staff Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
